Changes in seabed morphology, mud temperature and free gas venting at the Håkon Mosby mud volcano, offshore northern Norway, over the time period 2003-2006 ArchiMer
Foucher, Jean-paul; Dupre, Stephanie; Scalabrin, Carla; Feseker, Tomas; Harmegnies, Francois; Nouze, Herve.
The Håkon Mosby mud volcano is a 1.5-km-diameter geological structure located on the Southwest Barents Sea slope at a water depth of 1,270 m. High-definition seabed mapping of the mud volcano has been carried out in 2003 and 2006. A comparative analysis of the bathymetry and backscatter maps produced from the two surveys shows subtle morphological changes over the entire crater of the mud volcano, interpreted to be the consequence of mud eruption events. Mud temperature measurements point to a persistently warm mud at shallow depth in the crater. This is explained by upward fluid advection, rather than conductive cooling of mud flows. The small-scale spatial variability in the temperature distribution may be related to mud outflows or changes in the fluid...

Evolution model for the Absheron mud volcano: from in-situ observations to numerical modeling ArchiMer
Blouin, Arthur; Imbert, Patrice; Sultan, Nabil; Callot, Jean-paul.
The morphology of mud volcanoes (MV) has been extensively studied over the last few decades. Although recent research has begun to focus on deep processes and structures, little is known about mud generation mechanisms. This study aims to investigate the feeder system and formation of an active kilometer‐scale MV by relying on a 3‐D seismic survey and an in‐situ dataset on the Absheron anticline (South Caspian Basin). Seismic data show a depleted area in the Anhydritic Surakhany Formation (ASF), whose mineralogical composition fits with surface mud. Well data show that the ASF is a succession of evaporitic beds and low temperature shales near its fracture pressure. Biostratigraphic analysis confirms a Pliocene origin for the mud, suggesting that the ASF...

New insigths on the metabolic diversity among the epibiotic microbial communitiy of the hydrothermal shrimp Rimicaris exoculata ArchiMer
Zbinden, M; Shillito, B; Le Bris, Nadine; De Montlaur, C; Roussel, Erwan; Guyot, F; Gaill, F; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
The Rimicaris exoculata dominates the megafauna of some of the Mid Atlantic ridge hydrothermal vent sites. This species harbors a rich community of bacterial epibionts inside its gill chamber. Literature data indicate that a single 16S rRNA phylotype dominates this epibiotic community, and is assumed to be a sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. However attempts Of Cultivation were not successful and did not allow to confirm it. The aim of our study was to test the hypothesis of sulfide oxidation in the gill chamber, by a multidisciplinary approach, using in vivo experiments at in situ pressure in the presence of sulfide, microscopic observations and a molecular survey. Morphology of microorganisms, before and after treatment, was analyzed to test the effect of...

Role of pockmarks in diversity and species assemblages of coastal macrobenthic communities ArchiMer
Dubois, Stanislas; Derian, Francois; Caisey, Xavier; Rigolet, Carinne; Caprais, Jean-claude; Thiebaut, Eric.
We used existing bathymetric data to study the macrofauna of a geophysical pockmark field restricted to a benthic habitat engineered by the tubiculous amphipod Haploops nirae in South Brittany (France). Stations inside and outside pockmarks of different morphometric characteristics (location, size, depression depth) were sampled for macrofauna and environmental parameters (sediment characteristics, organic matter, chl a, hydrogen sulfide and methane concentrations). Diversity indices showed higher species richness inside pockmarks, especially for species with medium to high abundances. Most sediment cores showed low methane but high hydrogen sulfide concentrations. We hypothesised that after eruption, the remaining residual methane from pockmark sediments...

The Sea of Marmara hosts part of the North Anatolian Fault as an active submarine strike-slip fault. This area has suffered numerous earthquakes and presents a major seismic risk. Although the Sea of Marmara has been studied for many years, the link between geological morphostructures, the nature of fluids and biological communities is still rarely described. During the Marsite cruise (November 2014), dives with Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) VICTOR 6000 focused on detailed seafloor explorations of four different areas: the Central and Western highs and the Tekirdağ and Çinarcik basins. Based on 130 h of in situ videos, high-resolution seafloor mapping of seeps was conducted, emphasizing their significant geological and biological diversity from one...

Basin-wide estimates of the input of methane from seeps and clathrates to the Black Sea ArchiMer
Kessler, Jd; Reeburgh, Ws; Southon, J; Seifert, R; Michaelis, W; Tyler, Sc.
Numerous methane-emitting bottom features, such as seeps, methane clathrate hydrates (clathrates), and mud volcanoes, have been identified recently in the Black Sea. The fluxes of methane from these sources averaged over large spatial scales are unknown. Here we take advantage of the fact that the Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin with restricted deep water circulation to establish first-order estimates of basin-wide fluxes of methane from these sources to the water column and atmosphere. First, we measured tile natural radiocarbon content of methane (C-14-CH4) dissolved in the water column and emitted from seeps. The C-14-CH4 results showed that the dominant source of methane to the water column is emitted from seeps and a smaller source is...

Differences in gas venting from ultramafic-hosted warm springs: the example of Oman and Voltri Ophiolites ArchiMer
Boulart, Cedric; Chavagnac, Valerie; Monnin, Christophe; Delacour, Adelie; Ceuleneer, Georges; Hoareau, Guilhem.
Serpentinisation of mantle rocks, leading to natural venting of hydrogen and methane, has been reported to occur at the global scale, wherever fluids percolate in ultramafic formations. Here we compare gas composition from two on-land, low-temperature, and hyper-alkaline springs hosted on ultramafic rocks in the ophiolite massifs of the Sultanate of Oman and the Ligurian Alps (Voltri Group, Genoa region, Northern Italy). These two settings exhibit similar chemical and mineralogical features but show diverse styles of gas venting. Commonly to all hyper-alkaline springs, gases are characterised by relatively high N-2, very low O-2 and CO2 concentrations, and a strong enrichment in H-2 and CH4. The comparison between Oman and Liguria highlights a high...
